A classic recipe from Dictionarium Domesticum (1736), this dish features chicken cleaned and marinated in salt and vinegar (or lemon juice for a lighter touch). Opened by Jane Vobe in 1772, King’s Arms Tavern offers an immersive colonial dining experience. From period attire to pewter candlesticks, every detail reflects 18th-century elegance. Enjoy a chophouse menu inspired by historic recipes, featuring prime rib, pork chops, and more. ADA-accessible dining is available in the nearby Purdie Kitchen—please check in at the front for escorting.

The “Groaning Board” described a table so full of food it seemed to groan. In the 18th century, Shields Tavern welcomed travelers with global flavors—rum from the West Indies, tea from Asia, and wines from Europe. Once run by the Shields family, it served Williamsburg’s lesser gentry and travelers. Today, it offers an immersive dining experience, perfect for group gatherings and events.
