Conservation

Colonial Williamsburg's vast collections of decorative, useful, architectural, and archaeological objects and fragments are analyzed, examined, treated, and documented by our team of conservation professionals. The Conservation department includes seven media-specific labs, a materials analysis lab and the largest Preventive Conservation team in North America.

Conservators, Technicians, Aides, Interns, and volunteers work in our 75,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art collections building on the Bruton Heights campus, the Historic Area, the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, and the Campbell Archaeology Center. Their mission is to get our collections in stable condition, glean and share information on construction, materials, and evidence of use and age, and work with colleagues to make the collection accessible for visitors and scholars in a sustainable way. Learn more about each of the areas of specialization below.
