Debating the Constitution: Strategies for Teaching Civil Discourse with Primary Sources

In 1787, delegates at the Constitutional Convention discussed and debated the shape of a new nation. How can the debates of 1787 help students engage in respectful, meaningful conversations today? This online program begins with a presentation on strategies for teaching civil discourse, followed by a breakout activity where participants model these skills using primary sources from the Federalist vs. Anti-Federalist debates. Led by Joe Schmidt, Executive Director of K–12 Education at Colonial Williamsburg, this session will provide classroom-ready strategies and resources to bring civil discourse into your classroom.
