Making History Matter: Using Colonial-Era Documents to Build Inquiry and Civics Skills

Join Dr. Jeffery Nokes, historian and professor at Brigham Young University, for an engaging online workshop that bridges historical inquiry and civic learning. Historians use several strategies to make sense of primary source evidence and to use primary sources to answer questions about historical events and conditions. Using colonial Virginia documents,

Dr. Nokes will introduce and model several of these strategies and highlight how to adapt these strategies to promote historical thinking and civic education in the classroom.

Dr. Jeffery Nokes is a history professor at Brigham Young University and associate dean in the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences. Dr. Nokes studies historical literacy, history teaching, and preparing young people for civic engagement. Participants will receive 1 professional development hour for attending this session.
