As you approach, you’re immediately struck by the Tavern’s timeless elegance, with its inviting exterior and charming colonial architecture. But it’s not just the beauty of the building that will captivate you—it’s the story behind it that makes a stay here so special.

Unwind in the Heart of History

Market Square Tavern isn’t just a place to rest your head, it’s an immersive experience. Gather in the cozy Great Room, a space unchanged for centuries, and challenge fellow travelers to classic card games, a pastime enjoyed by patrons long ago. As the fire crackles, savor a cup of American Heritage Hot Chocolate, a delightful nod to the tavern’s colonial roots.

Stay Where History Was Made

The Market Square Tavern is a true gem in Williamsburg, having once served as the residence of none other than Thomas Jefferson during his law studies with George Wythe. Picture yourself in the same space where the future Founding Father rose early each morning, studying by the light of the first sunbeam until his chamber stick no longer illuminated the pages. This is the same room where the future architect of the American government honed his ideas, making it a deeply significant place for history lovers.

From the original fireplace in the Great Room to the cozy, well-appointed rooms above, each corner of this charming building resonates with the stories of the past.

Comfort Meets Colonial Charm

With 11 beautifully restored rooms, each featuring private full baths, the Market Square Tavern combines modern comfort with colonial elegance. The first floor hosts six rooms, including one with a private fireplace—perfect for those chilly Williamsburg nights. The rooms are thoughtfully decorated with period-appropriate furnishings, including three queen canopy beds and two double canopy beds, ensuring that you feel like royalty as you drift off to sleep.

The second floor is equally inviting, offering five rooms, some with double beds and one with a queen. Whether you're visiting as part of a large family reunion or a small intimate getaway, the Market Square Tavern’s flexible layout can accommodate your needs. And with an ADA-accessible room available, the Tavern ensures everyone can enjoy the experience.

A Tavern with a Legacy of Patriots

The Market Square Tavern’s history is rich with stories of revolutionary spirit. Once owned by Robert Lyon, a barber and wig-maker, the property was a hub for bustling trade and commerce in Williamsburg. As the owner of the tavern, Lyon supported the local community with his wig-making supplies, barbering services, and a variety of goods for sale.

But it was Gabriel Maupin, the Tavern’s next owner, who truly stamped his mark on the place. A prominent patriot during the American Revolution, Maupin named his son “George Washington Maupin” in honor of the future president. His Tavern was a gathering place for revolutionaries and civilians alike, and it continued to thrive as the hub of Williamsburg’s social life.

History of Reconstruction and Transformation

The Market Square Tavern has weathered its share of challenges, including a devastating fire in 1842. Though much of the structure was damaged, the Tavern was rebuilt, preserving its iconic charm. In the years following, the Tavern would continue to evolve, even adopting the name "Raleigh Hotel" after the destruction of the Raleigh Tavern in 1859. Today, the structure you see before you is a replica of the original Tavern, carefully restored to maintain its historical authenticity while offering all the modern amenities today’s travelers expect.

A Gathering Place for Families and Friends

The Market Square Tavern is not just a place to sleep—it’s a space designed for connecting with loved ones and enjoying the timeless beauty of Williamsburg. With its ample, inviting rooms and proximity to everything Williamsburg has to offer, it's the perfect location for large family reunions, special gatherings, or any occasion where you want to celebrate with friends and family in an unforgettable setting.
