All-American Jazz Band Swings Through Time

Step into the golden age of swing at the Kimball Theatre on Friday, June 19 at 7 PM, as The All-American Alumni Jazz Band delivers a high-energy tribute to America’s 250th anniversary, the Juneteenth holiday—and the centennial of Harlem’s legendary Savoy Ballroom.

When the Savoy opened in 1926, it wasn’t just a ballroom—it was a cultural revolution! Welcoming a packed house of 4,000 people on opening night with 2,000 more turned away, the Savoy quickly became the epicenter for the swing era. And it was the visionary African American civic leader and businessman Charles Buchanan who created this rare and instantly popular space where people of all races gathered to dance, connect, and celebrate to the electrifying American sounds of the day.

Inside the Savoy, music legends like Count Basie, Chick Webb, Ella Fitzgerald, and Benny Goodman ignited the dance floor—turning the venue into an international symbol of unity, rhythm, and joy.

Now, that spirit comes alive again. The All-American Alumni Jazz Band brings the Savoy sound roaring back with classics like “Stompin’ at the Savoy” and a thrilling program of big band and jazz hits spanning generations. Adding depth and insight to the evening, Norfolk saxophone legend Charlie Youngdirector of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and McDonald All-American Band alumnus—shares the remarkable story behind this iconic venue.

Under the direction of keyboardist Karen Altmann, this powerhouse ensemble features 30 elite jazz musicians from across the country—all alumni of the renowned McDonald’s All-American High School Band (1967-92). Special guest artists include Nashville first call trumpet Mike Haynes, assistant principal trumpet of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Rene Shapiro, and Chicago professional drummer Rich Trelease.

This is more than a concert—it’s a celebration of music, history, and the enduring power of jazz. Admission is free. Bring your friends, feel the rhythm, and experience the magic.
