A Heart-Felt Touch: The Genius of Scottish Songs
“Scottish songs, when sung in the genuine manner, must affect the heart of every person of feeling.” - attr. William Tytler, 1790
In the 1770s, Williamsburg’s citizens developed an increasing interest in folk music overseas. Scottish songs, often in a pastoral setting, fostered a hope for peace that became increasingly rare throughout the decade.
Join members of the Governor’s Musick ensemble as they explore the Scottish tunes sold, taught, and performed in 18th-century Williamsburg, and discover the musical genius of these old songs.
